This was the 20th World Exhibition. Occupying 484 hectares it surpassed all previous exhibitions in scale. It’s theme was “The World and Construction of Tomorrow”. Sixty-four countries participated in this exhibit, displaying nylon, plastics, magnetic type and television.
On 30 April 1939, President Roosevelt delivered a speech to an audience of 600 000 at the opening ceremony of the World Exhibition. Despite the ever-increasing menace of imminent war, Roosevelt’s speech and the excitement of the exhibition imbued the people with ardour, however temporary.
