For the details,refer my diary.As the author mentions in the preface,the book is based on secondhand research.Of course,the Qianlong emperor might be the most often researched figure in Chinese history.There are tons of books,in all kinds of language (Chinese,English,Japanese,French,and so on),focus on the Qianlong emperor and his long sixty-year reign.Although we have already known many aspects of the emperor and his rule,there was no biography of the emperor since Harold Kahn’s Monarchy in the Emperor’s Eyes in English until Elliot’s The Qianlong Emperor.Because the Qianlong emperor is so well researched,it is hard to find really new stuffs in his general biography.We can see all kinds of familiar arguments on the emperor in Elliot’s book.Although there is nothing new that we can find in the book,it is a sincere and strict research,which is based on the author’s sound understanding of the Qianlong emperor,the High Qing period,and his carefully summarize and use of the researches done by other scholars.It is a good book for undergraduate students who are interested in the emperor and the High Qing period.It is also useful for scholars who want to know general aspects of the Qianlong emperor and his rule.
