prepare for 意指“为……做准备”
be prepared for意指“为……做好了准备”,相当于be ready for
所以some students are preparing for the examination指的是一些学生在为考试做准备.
而some students are prepard for the examination指的是一些学生为考试做好了准备.两句话意思都不一样的.
你给的例句意为“一些学生熬夜不睡,在为即将到来的考试做准备.”是个典型的伴随状语.当然要用preparing而不用prepared.

现在分词做状语，因为句子的主语是some studentspreparing与主语的关系是主动的，过去分词一般表示被动。
