我感觉这句应该是省略句兼倒装：
“He is much more difficult to understand than his wife” 一般这样的句子都有某种感情色彩的!
简单翻译：他比他妻子难理解得多（暗含他们都让人难理解）
如果说这样说可以He is much less difficult to understand than his wife
简单翻译：他不如他妻子难理解得多
就是：他比他妻子容易理解得多!那为什么不说He is much easyer to understand than his wife
语言是为了交流才衍生出的,如果说起来生硬拗口,那人们是不会那样说的!
所以在这里不说less difficult!至于语法书怎么说,恕在下才疏学浅了!

本人感觉difficult不算是否定词，但是我也和楼主有同样的疑问，好象都可以的样子

意思是：要了解他，比要了解他的妻子更加困难。
much more不能换成much less，因为more difficult是比较级，不能说less difficult！
