He has a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from BITS, Pilani and went on to do a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1980, from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University. He has completed the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 2008. Before Ajoy took over the responsibility of heading sales & marketing for the Taj Group, from 1992 –97, he was the General Manager of Taj President Hotel in Mumbai and for a year in 1997-1998 was in Sri Lanka as Area Director – Sri Lanka and Maldives and General Manager of the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo.
