THEY say the average person tells three lies in 10 minutes of conversation. While you may argue that this is an exaggeration (夸张),there are professionals who read people as their vocation – they are deception* experts, scientists who study facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if a person is lying but why.
Lie to Me,a new American drama series, features a team of experts who assist FBI,local police, law firms and individuals with their most difficult cases.
“People may lie,but the evidence never does” is a common maxim (真理).But Lie to Me turns this formula (规则) around, treating people''s lies — and their signs — as evidence.
When you raise your eyebrows, wring (拧) your hands, wrinkle your nose, raise your lower lip or swallow too much,Cal Lightman,PhD,head of the experts in the TV series, knows you''re lying. He doesn''t just think so; he knows so.
By analyzing facial expressions, body, voice and speech,he can read feelings — from hidden anger to jealousy (嫉妒).Being a human lie detector,Lightman can uncover the deepest secrets and crack* the hardest cases.
But as Lightman well knows, his scientific ability is both a blessing and a curse (诅咒) in his personal life, where family and friends lie to each other as readily as criminals and strangers do.
Joining him are a variety of experts in the field of behavioral evaluation:Gillian Foster,PhD,is a gifted psychologist who brings warmth and tact (得体) to the team, which balances Lightman''s bluntness (直截了当); Eli Loker is a lead researcher, and he''s so aware of the human tendency to lie that he''s decided to practice what he calls “radical* honesty”:he says everything on his mind at all times and often pays the price, providing comic relief for the intense (紧张的) drama.

- When I asked James about his best race,he broke eye contact in order to remember and answer truthfully. And when I asked him about his run the night of the murder,he never broke eye contact.
- He wasn''t recalling a memory.He was lying.
- But I thought most people avoid eye contact when they''re lying.
-No,it''s a myth.And quite often,they make more eye contact.
They need to watch, see if you believe their lies.
