Having attained both fame and wealth that she dreamed of in the beginning of life in the metropolis,Carrie is sitting alone by the window,lonely and unhappy.Drouet has gone for good,abandoning his claim on her.Hurstwood's nameless body has been carried by boat to the field,his death being unknown to Carrie.The three characters entangled in the novel end up with completely different experiences.However,there are similarities in the way they pursuit happiness.Throughout the novel Sister Carrie,Theodore Dreiser draws vivid pictures of the main characters which reflect their views concerning felicity respectively,leaving the reader to ponder what is more important,material comfort or spiritual happiness.
The sweet Caroline Meeber,known as Carrie in the book,is poor and timid,yet full of ignorance and vanity.On the one hand,she is strongly driven by her material desires as depicted throughout the majority of the novel.First she is impelled by the nature of her desires to move to the metropolis Chicago.After arriving at her destination,she is fascinated by valuable goods in hundreds of stores there."There was nothing there which she could not have used nothing which she did not long to know." (Chapter III) She believes that wealth,fashion and ease are what the city holds.Nevertheless,she soon finds out that reality bites.In this context,running into Drouet again kindles her hope.The lure of the material world is so intense that she moves in with Drouet without any misgivings.She happily indulges herself in the rich lifestyle.However,she still wants more such as a decent marriage which can legitimize her both socially and morally.Realizing that Drouet has no intention of marrying her,she accepts the proposal made by another man with higher social statue,and this man is Hurstwood.But things do not always come up to people's expectations.The later downfall of Hurstwood,to some extent,creates a pathway to Carrie's stardom as a talented actress,since she has to find a job to support herself and finally gets employed at a theater.Carrie deserts Hurstwood in the end regarding him as a burden,which again testifies to her pursuit of material comfort.On the other hand,even material comfort cannot fill up the emptiness inside her heart,thus Carrie still longs for spiritual happiness.The introduction of the young electrical engineer Bob Ames plays an important part in the novel.Carrie is attracted to him because he is an exceedingly boy.
