Project management assignment!need help to draw structure chart!
You are a project manager at SNE Heavy Equipment.
You have just returned from a two-week trip from Barbados where you closed a very successful,well-managed project. You had given the team a well-deserved end of project party and released them from the project. On checking your voice mail at home, you see you have two messages. The first one is from the company president,William G.Pepper III who wanted to thank you for a job well done.He thought the
write-up in the Thursday's newspaper,The Mop and Pail, was great publicity for the
company. You suppress a smile and check the next message.Your smile disappears.
The message is from your boss,Director of Consulting.
"Welcome back,I couldn't get you on your cell.Guess you must have been on the
plane.Look,we have a situation.Project Minor has hit an all time low.The clients are
really unhappy with progress and the deliverables so far.In addition, performance is
pathetic and we are on the hook. The project manager is Alfred E.Newman.You may
know him already.I know you just got back but can we meet about this on Monday?
ASAP?I may need you to go to Aberness by Tuesday and get us out of this. You have
a good weekend."
You ignore the last remark and replay the message.Alfred had never been a good
project manager, but it may not be his fault. The clients here were Cold Stone
Minerals,a conglomerate of 3 leading mining companies. You knew that the project
in Nunavut was critical but you have no idea what could have gone wrong. Why do
you have to get this disaster project?Aberness up in the far north of Scotland in
December must be nice you surmise.

Monday - December 17,2007
As soon as you walk in to the company office in London, you realize that Alfred's
project must have been really bad. There is no welcome from anyone after your
successful Barbados project.Your boss calls you immediately for a closed-door
meeting.
It appears that the £1,300,000 project for delivering a computer system to locate
precious minerals has repeatedly identified incorrect drill sites. The contract cost is
relatively small. The eventual business from this project would generate revenue close
to £10 million. You raise an eyebrow and make a mental note "So why did Alfred
become PM for this,if it was such an important project?Didn't anyone read his
'Lessons Learned' reports from past projects?"
1.Organisation

2(1) Current situation.
• The project manager Alfred is not capable of this complex project,it is a bad decision which made by SNE heavy Equipment.
• Alfred's ten member team had lost hope due to the low performance of the project, they could not find any solution for performance problems and their seven months efforts proved to be a failure after all,and they are disappointed in their manager Alfred.
• Lack of communication with clients.Project team hided the initial project certain risk items from Cold Stone Minerals.
• Alfred had known that key test results done at Brainy Systems Inc.misplaced or lost and there were no backups which identified as a medium risk item.
• The Project Miner is started to deliver a computer system which have been never used successfully in the field. The system has been identified to locate the wrong site. The processing of the project has taken weeks, other than days, even after weeks; none of the 12 identified so far had located a vein.At the same time, the processing is costing SNE Heavy Equipment thousands of dollars a day.
• Cold stone minerals were willing to give us a try to save the project for another month, however if it fails then,SNE Heavy Equipment will get nothing at the end.
• The warranty period for the computer system expired but Alfred did not purchase maintenance which cost 00,000 and rather make team had ineffective training which cost 0,000 from BS Inc.
• The BS computer system had achieved a success rate of 90% in London,Kent and Dorset, but failed in Aberness. The team ascertained that they could not find any bugs in the program and asked to bring experts from BS Inc to help them but, budget is not enough.
• The Team used new Algorithms which had never been tested in the field, and never been proved correct in the field.Such a critical problem is still an unknown fact, which has not been communicated well to the Director.
• Financial constraints. After accessing to the algorithm computer programs, the team can not find any bugs in the program,so they wanted BS Inc.to send in their experts to the site to help them. But the project and management reserve have been used up already. The president would not invest more as the company is still unable to get back anything in the Project Miner. The clients do not want to put in any more money too, because they can think it is a big risk to put more money in the project.
2(2) Next Step:
The general problem is defined,so next step is to gather further information and see if I am capable of doing it.Aim is to get detailed information such as why system had 90% success rate had failed in aberness,is data which has been provided accurate, whether the failure is caused by human-made or the climate.By doing such investigation,I will have to have meeting with all members who are involved in this project, apartment of it,individual talk is necessary in case some information is hard to be gathered from meeting, but during the investigation process,I should not let others notice I will be 鈥渢he Savior鈥?Lastly, according to the reliability of the information, gaining people鈥檚 trust is important in this stage.
3.Fact Finding Session
Management leadership involves the influencing of others through the personality or action of the individual. For gathering as much as information as I can,I would organize more meetings especially individual meetings with both Alfred and him members or even experts from BS.As I can not appear as 鈥渟avior鈥?informal meeting will be more effective in this condition. The centre Idea is to be persuasive and good listener without show obvious purpose.
Because of the special situation,I would get the information from Alfred鈥檚 team members by using informal way, chatting with them like a friend,e.g.If the some of them seems so stressful or in bad mood,I would go to them, firstly show my respect and concern to them so that they would listen to me and open the conversation to you,and then try to ask what鈥檚 is going as a friend鈥檚 concern,as soon as they tell me what has gone wrong,I would console them rather than just walking away,so they would not discover my actual purpose.
Apartment from the above point, having working in SNE Heavy Equipment for a while,I may know some of the members of Alfred鈥檚 team or experts from BS,and it is always easier to talk to someone I know.
Moreover,I would invite some of the members to join social activities, such as dinner or party. In this condition they feel relaxed and leisured,so that it would be easier to talk to them in anything, and normally they wouldn鈥檛 detect my real purpose as it is covered by fun and probably they wouldn鈥檛 remember too much detail afterwards about what I have asked especially when they are bit drunk.
Furthermore,it is important to stress I have same goal with all the other members in SNE,when meeting Alfred and his members, which distract their imagination.
Sometimes,I just have to ask them hypothetic questions,e.g.,when I passing by a member,I would ask 鈥渢he brainy system is working well hah?鈥 and even if they are not interested in answering you,you can see the answer from their face(mood).
4.PROJECT CHARTER
Executive summary
PROCESS
We develop the Project Charter During 20/12/07 to 10/01/08(3 weeks) through a collaborative process.(Doda.S 2002)
PARTICIPANTS
The participants include project manager 0802983 and members of Project Team and contracted 鈥楤rainy Systems Inc.鈥 (Doda.S 2002)
OUTCOMES
Through process the Project 鈥淪ave Miner鈥?discover what is going wrong with the original project 鈥淢iner鈥?and put Project 鈥淢iner鈥 back on track and run successfully to meet client鈥檚 needs. This will make good profits and bring good reputation to SNE heavy equipment.
Project Heading
Project title:鈥楽ave Miner鈥橖br/>Project Sponsor:SNE Heavy Equipment
Project manager:0802983
Project Purpose:
The purpose is to save 鈥淪ave Miner鈥 is to evaluate problems of failed project 鈥楳iner鈥?The evaluation is concentrating on why the 鈥淏S System鈥 had failed in Aberness, and then creates a suitable system which can drill site for minerals accurately. In order to maximize potential of the project,we will improve our communication quality with clients and use risk management rationally.
Project benefit and success criteria
1.All the stuffs chosen are qualified to implement right skill in right field.
2.Save Miner Project processes and procedures are well documented.Such as the new algorithm computer programs is working well and and locate the correct location. And further more, compared with most projects in this industry,it costs less money, less time, less resources and so on.
3.adequate budget for all requirements and effected areas,it costs less money, less time, less resources than most project in the same industry.
4..The criteria are the internal rate of return (IRR),the cost per unit time:
(Cc 鈥 Cn) / (tn - tc),and the qualification of the minerals the project locates. And give them their weights differently, and then compare them with the surveyor's pole, which come from the more successful project in the industry,
