So here I thought of making myself visible sharing some of my experiences of my latest PhD adventure.
Canterbury is a beauty.Golden.Drizzling or shyly sunny,fresh at all times like the feeling of coming back to school.
University of Kent,School of European Culture and Languages,Department of Comparative Literary Studies.
I chose to attend the two MA course seminars available:'Literature and Theory' and 'Literature and Psychoanalysis' but it took me less than two weeks to realise that it would take all my time to do the reading for these two courses instead of doing my own stuff.I therefore decided to stick to the Psychoanalysis one which is extremely interesting and very relevant to some of the questions I've had in mind.We have already read the case of Schreber,Nietzsche's Ecce Homo,Freud's Little Hans and the Wolfman.I'm presenting on Louis Althusser's 'The Future Lasts Forever:A Memoir' focusing on whether madness can be documented from within or whether writing can contain madness.As for my other reading,I'm into Nietzsche at the moment (as you'll be able to tell).After this,more scary stuff follows,like Bataille,Deleuze etc.I have already made an outline of my project so that we laugh at how it will have changed in 3 or 4 years time.January is the next big deadline for a 10.000 word report on the readings I will have done by then..OMG (= Oh my God)
The rest of my time finds me in a flat at the brand new Virginia Woolf College,(each building named after one of Woolf's characters-mine is Dalloway) with 4 other people:Job and Dame from Thailand,Dorota from Poland and Guilherme from Brazil.No real problems besides noise in the corridor at 2:30am,dirty kitchen work top etc.Cute stuff...
So,yes,Canterbury is a beauty.You know,a small English town beauty.Picturesque (so anti-Nietzschean,but no big deal) and aristocratic,cultural even in a mainstream,traditional way,with Marlowe theatre staging not much more than Agatha Christie and Shakespeare or 'Calendar Girls','Titanic the Musical' and kids' Xmas shows this month.
I hope you are all doing great with work,studies and/or family.I'm looking forward to your news.
