2.表示地点时:I have never been to the places (that\where\in which) the Indians live.这里关系词如果用了where充当从句的状语,in which亦如是,那用that的话它充当什么呢?还是状语吗?还是不是任何成分?
还有的表示时间和原因的我不列举了,问题主要是that在从句中充当什么?

1.在这里做定语从句的引导词,是关系代词,修饰way的定语从句的引导词只能用that\in which或者不加.
2.第二句这样用是不对的.如果用that,live后面必须加一个介词in.因为that只能在定语从句中做主语,宾语或表语.不能做状语.

• the way之后，引导定语从句的关系副词是that而不是how。that作关系副词，是一种特殊的用法。

• 在正式语体中，that可被in which所代替；在非正式语体中，that则往往省略。由此我们得到the way后接定语从句时的三种模式（三种表达都是正确的）：

1. the way+that从句  

2. the way+in which从句   

3. the way+从句

　　例1：你这么个干法，简直疯了。

　　The way that you’re doing it is completely crazy.

　　The way in which you’re doing it is completely crazy.

　　The way you’re doing it is completely crazy.

　　例2：我们佩服他面对困难的方式。

　　We admired him for the way that he faces difficulties.

　　We admired him for the way in which he faces difficulties.

　　We admired him for the way he faces difficulties.

• 另外，the way（that）有时可以与how（作“如何”解）通用。例如：
  

　　That’s the way （that)）she spoke.（定语从句） = That’s how she spoke.（表语从句）
