A number of variations exist to the CIS strategy.These include the Speak (Spectral
Peak; [Seligman and McDermott,1995] ),ACE (Advanced Combination Encoder;
[Vandali et al.,2000]),and other “m-of-n” strategies [Ziese et al.,2000].The main
difference of these strategies with the CIS strategy is that not all electrodes are
stimulated on a sweep over the electrodes but only a selected number of them.The
main advantage of such a reduction of stimulated electrodes is that the stimulation
rate on the selected channels can be raised and thus more temporal accuracy is
available on these selected channels.
The functional block overview of the ACE strategy is given in Figure 1.7.The ACE
scheme is the default sound processing strategy for the implant system which is
implanted the most internationally,the Nucleus CI24 implant.In comparison to the
CIS scheme an extra processing block is inserted after envelope extraction.This
block performs maxima selection,i.e.only the m most intense channels are selected
and the other channels are put to zero.In this way only m (where m varies between 6
and 12) out of the 22 channels are stimulated on each processing cycle.Because the
maximal stimulation rate of the Nucleus CI24 implant is 14400 pulses per second,
only stimulating a selected number of the 22 electrodes allows stimulating at rates
up to 2400 pulses per second and per electrode.In contrast,if no maxima selection
would be performed,as in the CIS strategy,only 650 pulses could be stimulated per
second and per electrode.This latter rate might be too low for optimal transmission
of the temporal details of speech because the pulse rate should be about 4 to 5 times
higher than the highest modulation rate in cochlear implants [McKay et al.,1994].
The second group of cochlear implant sound processors do not interleave their
pulses like the CIS strategy (or its variants).Most of these current strategies are
derived from the CA strategy [Eddington,1980].Because a great advantage was
found for CIS-like strategies over the CA strategy [Wilson et al.,1991],most recent
strategies are derived from the CIS strategy.However,the SAS strategy
implemented in the Clarion device from Advanced Bionics uses simultaneous
stimulation like the CA strategy,but also incorporates a number of features to
minimize channel interaction [Battmer et al.,1997].With this improved
simultaneously stimulating strategy performance was reported to be comparable to
the CIS strategy [Osberger and Fisher,2000].
