Research on the post-Revolutionary period has produced conflicting accounts of
the structure of English textile exports to America with respect to the two key
issues in the historiography:the relative importance in the organization of trade of
London,Liverpool,and the major manufacturing towns9 and the respective roles
played by merchants and manufacturers in exporting textiles to America.10 The
disagreements in the historiography reflect that the preponderance of research has
been carried out on British sources,while the richer American mercantile sources
have been relatively neglected.Historians have used the American records extensively
for the colonial period,especially from the American perspective,but they
have scarcely been used to study the major developments occurring at the British
end of the trade in the late eighteenth century.In recent years,Smail,Morgan,and
Haggerty have drawn on American mercantile sources to provide fresh analyses of
English–transatlantic trade after 1750.These studies show that new modes of
business engendered high levels of interdependence between trading communities
on both sides of the Atlantic,especially the frequent trans-oceanic migrations of
English and American merchants and the use of new forms of business documentation
and credit practices.11 This article extends these recent studies of transatlantic
trade,casting new light on the organization of England’s textile exports to
America by integrating research on English industrial sources with a quantitative
analysis of the business papers of NewYork and Philadelphia merchants importing
English textiles.12 US sources permit a much clearer account of the central issues
concerning England’s textile exports to America.First,they allow us to estimate
the respective proportions of English exports despatched to America from
London,the outports,and the inland manufacturing regions (sections I and II).
Second,the American data provide information not available in the English
sources:the identity of the leading English export firms and the functions they
performed in the trade (section III).Third,the US sources allow us to explore the
commercial initiatives that underpinned the major reorganization of Anglo-
American trade in the second half of the eighteenth century (section IV).
