这么理解的话，这句话的意思就是：
直到老的时候，我明白说“不知道”（推托责任）是多么容易。
not...until 是固定搭配，表示直到。。。。。才。此句是一句强调句it is .....that....强调it is 与that之间的内容。至于翻译，只要根据它的语序来翻就行了
It wasn't ...that 是强调句型，此句中强调的就是until quite late in life ,强调句要把强调的部分提前，句中的其他部分置于that之后
