The infrared region of the spectrum was first discovered by Sir Frederick William Herschel (1738-1822) in 1800.Herschel was the founder of modern astronomy and discovered Uranus and other heavenly bodies.His son,Sir John F W Herschel (1792-1871) made important contributions to photography - he was the first to note that silver salts would dissolve in sodium thiosulphate,and discovered several printing processes including the blue-print (cyanotype) and chrysotype (gold print).When he heard of that photography had been invented,he went to his lab for a few days and worked out how it could have been done,rather than spending the years it took the other inventors.He also featured notably as a subject,yielding his soul to the probing lens of Julia Margaret Cameron in one of her finest portraits (see link on Herschel above.)
All normal photographic materials are sensitive to X-rays,including those used in airport security devices.The real danger to film - as a BBC film crew found to their cost a few years ago - is from high-powered baggage scanners.Film should never be packed in baggage to go in the hold and airports may allow hand inspection of photographic film.The scanners used for personal inspection are usually film-safe if they insist on scanning it.If you are carrying film,arrive in plenty of time to allow for inspection and also be prepared to remove any film from your camera.Packing films in clear plastic bags may save time.However security procedures are subject to frequent changes,and professionals taking film abroad (particularly in large quantities) are advised to consult their professional organisations for the latest information on taking film through airports etc.
