My Hobbies
Everyone has his or her own hobbies,some for profit,some for fun.Good hobbies make a person happy and fulfilled,but bad habits make a person dispirited and dangerous.
I have a lot of different hobbies,but none of them are bad.I like sports,music and literature.In sports,I like playing almost all games,such as:tennis,table tennis,badminton,soccer,basketball,snooker,bowling,swimming and hiking.After I came to Canada,I developed new hobbies,such as chess,poetry writing,skiing,snowboarding and billiards.In music,I enjoy classical music,such as the works of Bach,Mozart,Beethoven,Schubert,Strauss and Tschaikovsky.
Tennis is my favorite hobby; I have been playing it since the early 1970’s.I usually play once a week,even when I am busy.Before I came to Canada,I used to play tennis open tournaments in my city every year.Wherever I stay,I always play when I have free time.Since tennis is my hobby,I follow it with interest.I read a lot of books about tennis; I pay attention to it from different sources,such as newspapers,magazines,and TV tournaments.In the 1980’s I introduced the tennis theory to my country by translating World Tennis,an American magazine.I was also a tennis licensed umpire in my country.As an umpire,I took part in national and international tournaments held many times in different places in my country.
This hobby is good for me.It not only gives me health,strength and quick reflexes,but also allows me to have a lot of fun.I taught people how to play tennis when I stayed in Hamilton and Manhattan in 1994 and 1995.Since I moved to Vancouver,I have been teaching tennis in different areas; Vancouver,Richmond,North Vancouver,West Vancouver,Burnaby,Coquitlam,and Port Coquitlam to name a few.Every summer vacation,approximately 10 boys and girls from Taiwan come here to learn tennis from me.I havd had over 100 students.Of my students,the youngest is 3 years old; the oldest is over 70.Some of my students study at UBC,McGill,Waterloo and universities in America.I take great enjoymet from my tennis lessons.
Another favorite hobby of mine is poetry.I like ancient Chinese poetry,new poetry and antithetical couplet and poetry translation.I write in closed form and free verses in Chinese and also translate English poems into Chinese when I have time.Some of them have been published in different Chinese newspapers and magazines,such as World Journal,Canada China News,China Journal,Global Chinese Press,Evergreen News,Bridge,and The Overseas News of Canton Suburbs.I was invited to give my seminars on Chinese classical poetry at the Chinese Cultural Centre last September and November.
I love poetry but I fear it,because poetry writing consumes me a lot time.When I write or translate a poem,I never stop thinking about it,even in my dreams,until I finish it.
However,I enjoy all of my hobbies and interests,because they keep me away from the sorrow and loneliness in my life.
