我认为 the reason在定从中 不是 作状语时 而是作主语或宾语时 用 that
如 the reason that he told me is true 他告诉我的原因 是真的 that在定从中 作直接宾语
如果 the reason在定从中 作原因状语 关系词用why = for which
the reason why he was late was that he didn't catch the bus.关系副词why 在定从中 作状语
不过 that 可以 代替why 也就是 that有时 可以当关系副词 用
所以 第二句 也可以用that 这时 that=why =for which
也就是 that可以代替why 并且还可以省略 但why 不能代替 that

但是the reason why永远是错的，因为reason里面已经包含了why的意思，再用why引导就是重复
所以用the reason that，而且that可以省略（并且经常被省略）

虽然the reason is because非常常见，但是这是错误的用法
because是副词，不能引导表语成分
