一、在表示“因此/所以”时,so是个临界连词.从结构上看,它引导的似乎结果状语从句,很像从属连词；从意思上看,它不能与另一个从属连词because在一起使用,而且也不能置于主句之前,这一点和从属连词although和并列连词but的用法同出一辙,因此又像是并列连词.如：
 
　　It was late, so we went home. 天晚了, 所以我们就回家去了.
 但是不能说

Because it was late, so we went home

So we went home,it was late.

　　He was sick, so they were quiet. 他病了, 所以他们 很安静.
  同理,也不能说

Because he was sick, so they were quiet.

So they were quiet he was sick.

 
二、在下面的两种从句中,so 是从属连词
 
　　1、和情态动词 can/could 或 may/might 连用,引导目的状语,等于so that 的省略,表示“为的是/以便”,如：
 

Be quiet so he can sleep. 肃静些好使他能睡觉.

I stayed so I could see you. 我留下来以便能见到你.

 
　　2、引导条件状语从句,等于so long as 的省略,表示“只要”,如：
 

So it is done, it matters not how. 只要成功,怎么办都行.

So I live, I must study. 只要还活着,我就要学习.
