A Promise between Two Trees
Upon every late spring, the leaves of all normal trees will turn green. Their branches will take on an olive hue. However, there are two trees that will always have one wilted between them and the other one flourishing. These two trees take turns to flourish and wilt; For example, if the tree on the left is thriving, then the one on the right will have yellowing leaves, as if it's in dormancy. The latter will appear wilted, dried, unhealthy. Despite that, the tree on the right has not died of old age. On the contrary, it is still very alive. Once spring and summer come the next year, it will once again be full of life and flourish. But by then, the leaves of the tree on the left will be turning yellow, as if it is going into winter. In short, it is as if there exists some kind of a promise between the two trees: the one that thrives this year will wilt the next, and the one that wilts this year shall thrive the next.
The locals have once said that those two trees are incarnation of a loving couple. In order to escape the oppression of a tyrant, they took their lives by jumping into a river and ended up reincarnating as the two trees. I cannot help but think that this is only but a romantic fiction. I myself feel more inclined to believe the explanation provided by a wise man. He thinks that the because the two trees grow beside a river with their roots in between the hard rocks, nutrients are scarce. If the two trees were to take equally from the limited nutrients, neither of them could survive. That is why the two trees take turns to grow. Every year, one tree will only take what it needs to survive whilst the other grows. Through this method, the two tress are able to avoid vicious competition that will inevitably lead to the death of one of the trees. The wise man very appropriately suggested that they should be referred to as the mutualistic trees.
In everyday life, it is normal to encounter those who are always busy competing without gaining anything in return, only ending up driving away their close friends. In contrast, those who can see the bigger picture and understand the need to cooperate are the ones who end up being valued. Therefore, why don't we gain some wisdom from those two trees? Only with cooperation, mutual assistance, and humility can we all defeat adversities together.
