Specimens were compacted in accordance with the laboratory

The procedure consisted of the following steps:\11\2 mixing raw
aggregates thoroughly in a mechanical mixer to obtain a uniform
mix; \12\2 adding a specified amount of CFA \110% of dry aggregate
weight\2 and mixing thoroughly with the raw aggregate \110% CFA
is considered the optimum additive content\2,as per Zaman et al.
\11998\2; \13\2 adding half of the required water to the aggregate-
CFA mixture and mixing thoroughly; and \14\2 adding the remaining
water and mixing thoroughly until a uniform mix was
achieved.The resulting mix used to prepare one specimen,which
was divided into three parts,each weighing approximately
9.66 kg \121.25 lb\2,and the specimens were covered to minimize
any moisture loss.
A split compaction mold was designed and fabricated for this
purpose.Details on the mold sizes are given by Khoury and
Zaman \12006\2.Each specimen was compacted in three layers at
the optimum moisture content \1OMC\2 \17.0%\2 and maximum dry
density \1MDD\2 \121.7 kN/m3 or 137.8 pcf\2.A specified amount of
