Norman Bethune
He was a famous Canadian in both Canada and China because of his outstanding contribution to the medical history. He was also known as the inventor of the first practical method for transporting blood.Who was he?
His name was Henry Norman Bethune. He was born in Gravenhurst,Ontario in 1890.Norman went to the navy in Spain after he graduated from the University of Toronto as a thoracic surgeon.During his time in Spain (1936-1937),he met a woman whose father was rich and he fell in love with her. They soon got married, but their marriage did not last very long because they had different interests. It was in Spain where he developed the first practical method for transporting blood. He was sent back to Canada because he was badly wounded in World War I.Then he later went to China, where he was served as a doctor in the military without any pay.“A doctor’s job is not to make money, but to save people.” This is exactly what Norman was doing in China, helping the poor and saving the lives of thousands of Chinese people.
There are certain qualities that successful people have that make them successful. One of Norman Bethune’s qualities was that he was a responsible man.He had a hospital when he was in China as a doctor. He would always check his medicines before he went to bed, just to see if there were any wrong labels or if the medicines were enough for his patients the next day. That was an unnecessary act, because he could just tell the nurse to do it,but he thought that he was responsible for it,not the nurses.“It is the patient’s life that will cost us if there are anything goes wrong.” Norman had always said this.He was not just being responsible to his patients, but his job too.To puts one’s life at risk was the hardest part for a soldier to do,especially when you are saving someone else’s life. But it seemed pretty easy for Norman to do it.His life was always in risk on the battlefield where he had been always trying to save lives of the soldiers’.
Another one of Norman’s qualities was that he was selfless. He would put his life at risk to save someone else’s life. There was a time when Chairman Mao had told him that he would receive $100.00 each month for himself.During that time,$100.00 was worth lot more than just money. It meant a different between rich and poor. You could almost do anything with that amount of money.Everyone thought Norman would take it,but he did not.“The money will do much better on my patients than on me.” This was what he said when people asked him about the money. At the last moment of his life,Norman had told the nurses to leave him alone, and try to save someone else’s life instead of his own.He had even told them to record his feelings about the disease that he had,so others would know what was going on if someone else got it.
Norman Bethune died in 1939 because of the disease that he got from a soldier when he was trying to save him.He was a responsible and selfless man.In other words,he was a hero.
