Last autumn I spent a week at a big hotel in London. It was one of those modern hotels where every room is the same size and has the same furniture（家具）, and looks just like every other room.
My room was 311. One night I got back to the hotel after a dinner with some friends. When I opened the door to my room, I saw an astonishing scene. A man was pointing a handgun at a woman sitting in a chair, and the woman was saying in a frightened voice, “please don’t shoot me!” I turned round, ran down the stairs-I daren't wait for the lift-and found a waiter in the hall “ Quick ,” I cried, someone is been murdered in my room. Controlling his surpise , he came back with me, but when we opened the door of 311, the room was empty . The waiter looked at me sadly and said, “I think, sir, you had better go to bed,” and left. I was too bewildered to say anything, and thinking that I must have had too much to drink , I followed his advice.
The next morning, I asked about the matter, and the explanation was simple. Ihad gone to Room 411, where a famous actor and his wife had been practising a scene from their new play . When I told them that it was I who had burst into their room, they laughed and gave me a ticket to see the play on the opening night.

我住在311房间.一天晚上,在和一些朋友喝完酒以后回到宾馆.当我打开房间的门时,看见一个令人吃惊的场景,一个男人正拿着手枪对着一个坐在椅子上的妇女,那名妇女带着害怕的口气说道：“请不要杀我!”我立刻掉转头,顺着楼梯往下跑--我不敢等电梯--当在大厅发现服务员时,“快,”我尖叫道,“有人在我的房间被谋杀了.”于是,他和我一道回去,但是当我们打开311房间的门时,房间已经空了.服务员失落的看着我说：“我想,先生,你最好上床休息.”然后就离开了.我困惑地不知该说什么,想想可能是自己喝的太多了的缘故,便遵从了他的建议.第二天,我问起在这件事,给予的解释很简单,我昨晚去的是411房间,那里住着的一个著名的演员和他的妻子在排练他们新剧中的一个场景.当我告诉他们是我昨天晚上冲进他们的房间了,他们大笑并给予了我一张观看那幕剧的首映票.
