Hello! Everybody! Today, my topic is the Olympic Games. I’m very happy to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of the Olympic Games. As you know, the 2008 Olympic Games will be host in Beijing! I am really proud of my great motherland, China!
Chinese people always appreciate the purposes and principles of Olympic ideal, support the efforts of Olympic Games to promote world peace. The Chinese Government and people are doing our best to prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, It is our hope to make it a grand gathering that will carry forward the Olympic spirit, promote world peace and ①enhance the friendship among people of the world, so that the Olympic spirit will flourish once again, this time in China, an oriental country with an ancient ②civilization.
Now, let’s share the spirit of Olympic Games! You are my adversary, but you are not my enemy. For your resistance gives me strength, your will gives me courage, your spirit ③ennobles me. And though I aim to defeat you, should I succeed I will not humiliate you; instead, I will honor you. For without you, I am a lesser man. How great the spirit is! It encourages me to work hard. history for our country, we have come a long way. 59 years ago, we were a poor
country trying to create as many jobs as we could to feed our people. There was no
Changi Airport, no multinational corporations or financial centre, no defence capability
of our own. Only 60% of our people were literate. Only 11% of our students progressed
beyond secondary school. Few people thought we could succeed, or even survive.
But we overcame the odds. By working hard, finding our own solutions and tying our
futures together as a people, we transformed Singapore into what it is today.
