CHINA’S quality inspector has ordered Mengniu Dairy Co.,the nation’s biggest liquid-milk producer to stop using additives that possibly increase the risk of cancer in consumers,the National Business Daily reported yesterday.
The company was ordered to stop using osteoblast milk protein and insulin-like growth factor-1,or IGF- 1,in its Milk Deluxe brand,the newspaper said,citing a government document.
According to an academic,Fan Zhouzi,IGF-1 may raise the risk of cancer,the paper said.
The order issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine didn’t say that the ingredients were harmful,only that they hadn’t been approved as food additives.
Mengniu’s stock plunged 12.5 percent to close at HK$10.10 (US$1.30) in Hong Kong after the report.
