Lawrence Henderson was walking slowly in the
school garden, deeply lost in thought.
Several weeks earlier a
company laboratory in town had asked him to work for them at almost twice the
salary (薪水) he was getting as a teacher. He
didn’t know whether to accept it or not, because he liked teaching, but he
wanted to get more money for his family.
That evening, his student,
Bob, paid a visit to him. Lawrence asked whether Bob was working as a salesman.
Bob replied that he wasn’t and said he wanted to thank
Lawrence for helping him decide what he should do. Lawrence was surprised. Bob
explained, “I spent six months in your class and every thing changed. You made
chemistry so interesting that I gave up the idea of becoming a salesman and
decided to continue studying science. I’m now preparing to become a
doctor. Thank you, Mr Henderson, for not letting me make a mistake.” Lawrence
said, “You’re helped me more than you know.”
After Bob left, Lawrence
said to his wife, “It isn’t money that made me want to
leave teaching. I don’t know if I was successful as a
teacher. Bob is only one student, but that’s enough. If I helped one
student, I guess I helped the others too --and I feel much better about everything.”
