As of 8:00 am Thursday, police had pulled more than 5500 earthquake survivors from the debris. Elsewhere more than 50000 people had been evacuated from Wenchuan and other badly hit regions including Dujiangyan, Beichuan and Maoxian in Sichuan and Longnan in Gansu.

The Ministry of Communications has begun to move rescue teams to the worst quake-hit areas by a waterway from Zipingpu Reservoir in Dujiangyan. Reports say that army troops have opened a water route and transported more than 800 people this morning. In addition, the highway linking Beichuan with Mianyang was broken through, allowing heavy rescue machines to enter Beichuan.

BOCOG said that the Olympic torch relay will join in earthquake relief activities around China in the coming months. In Jiangxi, participants observed a minute of silence for the victims before the relay. The torch relay finished the Jinggangshan leg Thursday, and will take place in Nanchang tomorrow.

The 2008 Sichuan earthquake (Chinese: 四川大地震; pinyin: Sìchuān dà dìzhèn), magnitude 7.9 Mw, occurred at 14:28:01.42 CST (06:28:01.42 UTC) on 12 May 2008. In China, it was named after the earthquake's epicenter in Wenchuan County, Sichuan province of the People's Republic of China (Chinese: 汶川大地震; pinyin: Wènchuān dà dìzhèn). The epicenter was 90 kilometres (56 mi) west-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, with a depth of 19 kilometres (12 mi).[2] The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing and Shanghai, where office buildings swayed with the tremor.[3] The earthquake was also felt in nearby countries.
Official figures (as of 14 May) state that 14,866 are confirmed dead and 66,286 injured,[4][1][5] while the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that 19,565 (including 7,700 in Yingxiu, near the epicenter) are dead and 26,206 injured.[6] The Chinese government said that the death toll could reach 50,000.[7] Tens of thousands are missing, many of them buried, and eight provinces were affected.[8][9]It was the deadliest and strongest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, which killed approximately 250,000 people.[10].
