And as a consequence, subtitle translation becomes a more significant sub-field in translation studies.The study of subtitle translation in developed countries, especially in western countries has been systematic and it is more advanced than that of China. But now Chinese scholars have realized the importance of subtitling and have been doing more work.The present thesis, A Pithy Style:Strategies in Film Subtitling, aims to do some research on the strategies by a dual method both theoretical and practical.The thesis employs some great theories （skopostheorie, relevance theory and etc.） as theoretical foundation to lay out principles of subtitling and then takes films directed by Yimou Zhang as cases to analyze the strategies used frequently and ranks them. The clear conclusion is that to reach a pithy style is a general strategy in film subtitle translation
