Iris recognition is giving a new "look" to personal identity.See this cutting-edge science. Then try it yourself!
Nick D'Alto
How can you tell an ordinary airline passenger from an international spy?Or an everyday banking customer from a dangerous cyber-hacker?That's easy.Just look into their eyes using a new identity technology called iris recognition.
This high-tech identity tool can help officials spot a wanted criminal at an airport,or recognize you at a bank's ATM terminal. How is it done?By examining the complex patterns in the human eyes. That's the pigmented ring between your sclera (the white of your eye) and the pupil (the dark centre). In other words, the part of your eye that is brown,or hazel,or blue.
You Have Your Mother's Eyes
Not really! The patterns that make up your irises are different from those of everyone else in your family, and also from those of every other person in the world.Fingerprints are also unique, but irises contain more information than fingerprints — there are more patterns and variations for a biometric scanner to pick up.Scientists call both fingerprints and iris patterns epigenetic (not determined by genetics). That's what makes them so varied — and so good for verifying your identity.Even identical twins don't have exactly the same fingerprints,or the same iris patterns.
Your Own "You-nique" Irises
Examine your eyes closely in a mirror (a magnifying mirror works best). Those many different-shaped dark flecks around your iris all have names.Scientists call them rifts, pits, freckles, crypts, and coronas. At a microscopic scale, smooth, shiny irises become jagged mountain ranges of "contractive furrows" and "serpentine vasculatures." Those are just fancy names for your unique eye patterns.
Your iris patterns remain unchanged throughout your life.In fact, they virtually cannot be altered. Also squinting, contact lenses,or other simple tricks can't fool a state-of-the-art iris scanner.
Iris scans also work in a fraction of the time required for fingerprint matching, voice printing,or other biometric measurements.
They're already used in highly secure workplaces.Instead of using traditional identity methods, like ID cards or PIN numbers,at these places all you need is your eyes. Some schools scan their students' irises for security records, and at many of the world's airports your eyes are even better proof of identity than your passport.Soon, you might make a credit card purchase, have a prescription filled,or log onto a computer, just by looking in the right direction!
1.Determine whether the following statement is true.
The pigmented part of a person's eye is known as the sclera.
A.The statement is true according to the passage.
B.The statement is contradictory to information given in the passage.
C.The required information is not given directly nor can be reasonably deduced from the passage.
2.What is implied in the third paragraph of the article?
A.The only people in the world who have the exact same fingerprints are twins.
B.A person's iris has more patterns and variations than his or her fingerprints do.
C.A person's fingerprints and iris patterns are determined by genetics only.
D.Iris patterns cannot be used to identify a person's true identity.
Iris recognition is giving a new "look" to personal identity.See this cutting-edge science. Then try it yourself!Nick D'AltoHow can you tell an ordinary airline passenger from an international spy?Or an everyday banking cust
B. The statement is contradictory to information given in the passage.
That's the pigmented ring between your sclera (the white of your eye) and ...
这句话已经指出了pigmented ring(即pigmented part)是介于眼白和...
The pigmented part of a person's eye is known as the sclera有颜色的部分就是眼白的这一陈述就和以给的信息相矛盾了.
B. A person's iris has more patterns and variations than his or her fingerprints do.
Fingerprints are also unique, irises contain more information than fingerprints. there are more patterns and variations for a biometric scanner to pick up.
