The Shawshank Redemption,written by Stephen King,give us an impressive story about prison break.The book was very famous,of course,and the movie adapted from it was successful as well.
The book was written in the angle of Red,an old criminal in Shawshank,to give an objective description of the story.The delicate characterization and attractive suspensese impressed me very much.
At the year of 1948,a banker named Andy Dufresne got in to Shawshank because he was wrongly accused of murdering his wife and her lover.He suffered a lot in the prison and knew a sleeky fellow,Red,and they became friends before long.He bought a lot of things from Red in Shawshank,including several posters,two little hammers to carve the stone for fun.
In his twenty seven years’ life in Shawshank,he became an important person because of his knowledge and ability on economy.He acted as a free financial adviser of the prison and the COs(Correctional Officer).
On March the 12th,1975,when all the cell doors opened,Andy didn’t appear.It took the COs a whole day to look for him without any result at last.Andy took twenty seven years to dig a hole on his wall,and covered it with the posters.Finally he escaped from the prison and began his new life abroad.
There were many hints through out the story,such as Andy said he imagined to step into the poster and enjoy the warm sunlight outside,or Red said Andy acted as he always had an invisible coat of freedom on,or a convict lived with Andy complained about the cold air and unpleasant smell in Andy’s cell.When you got to the end of the story and all the truth came out,you’ll be surprised of how delicate the suspenses are!Andy was finally free,after his twenty seven years’ struggle.His heart of freedom never died.Maybe Andy’s optimistic towards life and desire to destination was the most splendid part of the story.
Andy was a smart,brave and kindhearted guy as well.When he was in Shawshank,he did a lot of things to run a little library,helped several convicts learned something useful and out of the slough of crime.He struggled with the gays who troubled him a lot.He knew how to get things he want and control the situation.His knowledge made him almost indispensable person in Shawshank.
The book is really inspiring and admirable.The story makes me feel that if some day,when life abandons you,even if it’s not your fault,you shall never give up,you shall just try to change the destroyed life with your own hands,because there’s always something we can do,there’s always hope.
