A wonderful trip to Yunnan
Three years ago, in July 2006 I took a trip to Yunnan with my colleagues. We decided to go there by plane because it was the fastest means of transport when we wanted to travel a long distance so that we could save more time. We couldn’t believe it only took us about three and a half hours to fly from Beijing to Kunming. What’s more, most of us hadn’t taken a plane before and we heard the service was pretty good. When we were on the plane, we were attended by a beautiful hostess who took care of us along the flight. We felt comfortable, excited and relax. In addition, it was exciting to do anything that we wanted on the plane during the flight. We could choose to watch movies or listen to music for free. The plane took off on time and landed safely on Kunming Airport.
We spent seven days in Yunnan and we visited Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. In Kunming we climbed Xishan, visited the Flower Market and the Stone Forest. We enjoyed the most famous delicious local dishes: Across Bridge Rice Noodle and Xuanwei ham at a local famous restaurant. In Dali, our first stop was Erhai. Then the Three Pagodas in the Chong Sheng Temple and went for a wonder through the beautiful Dali Ancient City where I bought some souvenirs such as wood carvings for my family. Liajiang, home to the Naxi people a beautiful town and we were lucky to have good weather when we stayed there. After a couple of hours wondering around the town we attended a traditional Naxi dance and music performance. Then the next day we went to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. We took cable cars up to the peak of the mountain, hiked in the mountain and enjoyed the breath-taking view of the main peak white.
Among the most dramatic attractions we visited on our trip to Yunnan Province were The Stone Forests and a boat trip on Erhai. Maybe you have heard about Shi Lin (The Stone Forests ) which referred to since the Ming Dynasty as the “First Wonder of the World.” The park was extremely beautiful, full of curved paths through striking tall stones with names like “bell stone” and “ looking at heaven and earth through a hole.” The tour guide told us that each formation had a story about animals or people associated with it. Of all the stones, the one like a beautiful girl in a legend was the most famous. Its name is A Shima. There was a movie about it, too. We took lots of photos in front of it. Hiking through this amazing place was really a fun experience!
After two days travel in Kunming, we arrived in Dali in the early morning. Although we didn’t have enough sleep, we were refreshed by the mountain air. A boat on Erhai, one of the largest lakes in Yunnan was the first major activity of the day. Though it was too expensive to take the big boat, it was worth when we went for a boat ride in the lake, looking at the beautiful scenery and crystal-clear waters. I couldn’t help thinking how charming and attractive Erhai Lake. That was why people said it would be a great pity if people traveling to Kunming without having a glance at the scenery of Xishan. The boat trip lasted for almost four hours. There we enjoyed the unique Three-course-tea, a welcoming ceremony of the Bai nationality and their dancing and singing performance. When the boat stopped at an island, we walked around if for half an hour. I bought three rings with spiders in it which means good luck.
During that trip, I met some wonderful people, the grace hostess, the helpful tour guide and the skillful coach driver. I also saw some amazing things. You can’t image I had a face-to-face contact with a white mouse in a four-star hotel. It was two days before we came back to Beijing. When I chatted with my friend in bed, suddenly we heard a noise coming from my backpack which was full of souvenirs and a small bag of sunflower seeds. We stopped talking and went towards the backpack. Suddenly a white mouse came out of it and ran away quickly. I checked my backpack. Luckily it was ok but to my surprise, the mouse ate a lot of sunflower seeds and left the shells behind just like we human beings did. How smart it was! That was why so many people kept mice as their pets and Walt Disney created the famous Mickey Mouse.
Though we were extremely exhausted after one week’s travel, the trip to Yunnan was very interesting and rewarding. It impressed me greatly. I will never forget it.
