对汉语典故的英文翻译
汉语典故多出于中国的历史、寓言、神话传说.由于其语言功能和结构与汉语基本相同,所以人们往往把典故和成语一起合称为“成语典故”.在这里之所以分开来讲,是因为典故常常是四个字概括了一个有丰富寓意的故事,具有中国独特的文化色彩.虽然现代汉语中运用典故,只是取其寓意,但是翻译时,我们一般采用“增补法”——既使译文保留原文习语的生动形象,又使读者充分理解原文,了解中国文化.
A 译出典故的字面意思,增补寓意,如：
木已成舟：the wood is already made into a boat --- what’s done is done.
B 对典故进行加注,如：
伯乐相马：as capable as Bo Le in discovering talents.
----- Bo Le,named Sun Yang,who was said to be very capable of discovering best horses.
另外,汉语中有许多含义相近的四字词组,如“五光十色”和“色彩斑斓”；“见异思迁”和“喜新厌旧”等,他们的总体意思相近,侧重点不同,在上下文允许的情况下,可以酌情替换和简译.
总之,汉语四字格的翻译必须在符合原文含义的基础上,加以润饰,使之达到最优效果,要达到这个境界,我们还需不断的学习和实践.
