The song, O Holy Night is a Christmas carol that may be familiar to many of us. The lyrics of the song tell the story of how and why Christmas came to be celebrated and explain the ways people celebrate it. First, the song relays to us that Christmas is an important day to celebrate because it is when Christ was born (“It is the night of our dear savior’s birth”) and that he is important and worthy of being celebrated because he took the sins and wrongdoings by people in the world away (“Long lay the world in sin and error pining, “Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.”)
The recurring phrase of “Fall on your knees” in the song refers to, is to either kneel and pray, or to prostrate yourself in worship of God. This is done and explained very often in the stories of The Holy Bible. By telling us to ‘Fall on our knees’, the song explains that a way people celebrate the birth of Christ with is by praying and worshipping God. The lyrics of this song also tells us what the good things Jesus has done for us are, including teaching us to love each other; making it a rule to love others and spreading the gospel of peace (“His law is love and his gospel is peace”) and releasing people from slavery (“chains shall He beak for the slave is our brother”). For all these good things he had done for us, the lyrics tell us we should sing hymns (like the song O Holy Night itself) in praise of him with our gratitude.(“Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we Let all within us praise his holy name”) This explains yet another Christmas tradition, by telling us the reason people sing hymns like O Holy Night to celebrate the Christmas holiday is to express our gratitude to Jesus for redempting us from our sins through song.
