It seems so strange that one day can bring about so many emotions. The first day of school, especially for a Kindergartener, can be scary and exciting. But what most parents aren’t prepared for is how scary, exciting, and sad it is for them as parents.
I can’t even begin to count the number of times I told myself how much easier it would be when all my kids were in school but on the first day of Kindergarten for my youngest I found I wasn’t quite ready to let him go. In fact we had a going to school party the night before in order to get him excited about it but, looking back, I think I needed it more than he did.
On the first day of Kindergarten I kept telling myself that I needed to keep from crying in front of my son so I wouldn’t scare him but that was much harder than I expected it to be. I did pretty well until it was time to drop him off at the school. As I walked with him up to the big double doors of the school building I started crying and he gave me a quick hug and kiss and told me it would be alright and he would see me after school. As I looked around I felt better knowing that I wasn’t the only parent there with tears in their eyes.
While it gets easier and easier each year to send them off on that first day of school there is still a little part of me that wishes they could be home with me all the time. I always try to remind myself of this when it’s the middle of the summer and I can’t stand the idea of refereeing one more argument about who gets to play the Xbox first or whose turn it is to take the dog out. One thing I have discovered is that I appreciate holidays and summers more than I did before my kids started school.
So parents, if you find yourself getting teary eyed as you start shopping for school clothes and the letters from the school start coming in the mail just remember that while the first day of Kindergarten is going to be hard on both you and your child it’s a journey that you both must take and with each passing year it becomes a little easier.
