In recent years, more and more international students come to Australia TO SEEK higher education. However, there are many challenges FOR THOSE STUDENTS especially TO ADJUST to a new academic culture. This essay will talk about three main DIFFERENT AREAS FROM style, assessment system TO educational background then some advice to help those students overcome the difficulties.
One of the main problems for international student is about the thinking style. THAT a Japanese student who studied well in Tokyo but failed in his essay in Australia can be taken as a good example. The teacher wanted students to compare and analyseS the similarities and differences between two person’s views. Unfortunately, although the Japanese student introduced lots of details about their background and personal life, his summary was so brief that there WAs no comment in his essay. (Ballard & Clanchy 1984). It is clear that the Japanese student still insisted IN writing IN his old thinking style. Therefore, the essay without critical thinking was not acceptable. According to his situation, some methods should be taken to solve this problem. Firstly, the international students should make an effort to adjust to the new academic culture. Secondly, students have to change their thinking style to consider more about new situation and new culture style. Finally, seeking help from teachers is the most significant way to get higher scores and overcome the problems.
The different assessment system can cause a lot of problems for international students. Assessment grades is a good example; the assessment grades here include 4 levels; Pass, Credit, Distinction and High Distinction. Many international students feel disappointed about their first mark, because they were usually get high marks before but only got pass here. So the system of mark in Australia is so tough that some American students were shocked by the marks for their first essay. (White 2003) In addition, some students found it is hard to write their essay. They cannot just follow their teachers’ ideas and must always give references to avoid plagiarism. It is a hard job for some students and if they ignore the importance of reference they will not get a high mark. Now it is clear that nobody can adapt to a new environment perfectly. So asking teachers for help will be the best way to solve the problem and can lead international students into a right way to adapt to the new assessment system. Besides, make sure that you know the requirements about your essays or exams clearly, WHICH can avoid many unnecessary problems.(THIS EXPRESSION IS NOT CLEAR ENOUGH)
Different educational background is another challenge for international students. A student from Sri Lanka told Her experience. According to Ponniahpillai (2000) in her country students have a lot of respect for their teachers and they always keep distance from their teachers. The teachers will call a student if they find some of them have problems. So their learning experience do not encourage them to ask QUESTIONS and most of them never DO IT although they do not understand. This academic habit is not acceptable in Australia for the aim of education here is to develop independent learning skills. So one of the most efficient methods to avoid problems is use library. They search for useful information which will lead international students to be independent. Another way is ‘if in doubt ask’(Ponniahpillai 2000), teachers in Australia talk with students friendly, so do not feel shy BUT talk with them SO THAT the problems can be solved quickly.
In conclusion, it is clear that if international students want to succeed here they must change their thinking style as soon as possible and make sure they know the new assessment system. Moreover, forget their old educational background and enjoy this new academic culture. In addition, remember TO ask for help from the teachers or friends when in doubt and it can help international students solve the difficulties quickly. There will be a promising future for the international students if they can overcome those challenges and difficulties.
