英语翻译
Art Deco
Heralded as “the last of the total styles”,Art Deco was certainly one of the first mass-produced styles to find an audience of mass consumers.Although it originated in the highly exclusive hand-made French decorative arts of the 1920s,it was quickly exploited through the cheap mass production of new materials-metals,plastics and glass, and found its way into cheap,ephemeral,mass-produced decorative items such as cigarette cases, perfume bottles household ceramics and glass, fashion textiles and accessories, and cocktail shakers. As a decorative style it could be applied to the forms and surfaces of any number of objects, thereby endowing them all with the same quality of instant modernity and fashionability.
Like many of this century’s popular styles,Art Deco had its roots in high culture,in these cases:Cubism, the Russian Ballet,American Indian Art and European Purism, but its appeal lay in its decorative eclecticism rather than in the significance of any one of its sources.A combination of factors led to its popularity in the 1930s:the relative low price of the goods it accompanied-a direct result of cheap mass production and the use of new materials-was clearly a sine qua non,but this in itself was not enough.A further condition was its symbolic appropriateness. This is often explained by the fact that it made overt references to luxury and extravagance during a period of economic depression thus providing a form of escapism for the public. The way in which the style was disseminated also encouraged its availability and, hence, its popularity.Art Deco was,for example, the style that Hollywood chose to use in many popular films of the period and it reached masses of people through that medium. In addition to its use in packaging and advertising, which made a significant impact on the mass environment,Art Deco also penetrated the architectural environment, embellishing the facades of new commercial and entertainment premises such as shops, cinemas, factories and even the new luxury liners,as well as being used as the major architectural style in large exhibitions, like the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933.
It came to symbolize efficient, modern living and to convey a new, exciting life-style which was highly attractive to the mass consumers of the interwar years for whom fashionability was becoming an increasingly important means of expressing their social aspirations and status.
