Leifeng Tower is said that it was built for imprison a female snake demon.In the legend of Leifeng Tower there are two female snake demons,the Green Snake and the White Snake.Though being called demon,those two snake girls are merely naughty,and unfortunately,love too much.
One day the White snake saw an intellectual boy named Xu Xian,she fell in love with him at the first sight.So,girl met boy.Girl fell in love with boy.Girl planned a "chance-meeting" at the Broken Bridge and made boy fell in love with her.Girl married boy and opened a clinic to make money for boy's study.Girl became Lady White for her kind treatment to town people.And they should all happily live together,if not for the Mighty Monk Fa Hai.
Fa Hai is not a bad person.It's just when somebody saw a demon with a human,their first reaction tend to be "Demon!Die!" with lots of crosses and holy water.So,Fa Hai took Xu Xian away from his wife for his own safety.Of course Lady White wanted her husband back,she was pregnant!So Lady White went to battle Fa Hai.She nearly won,but her unborn child caused her defeat.After giving birth to her son,she was imprisoned,being held down by the Lei Feng Tower.
20 years later,her son Xu Shi Lin won the Number One Scholar in the royal examination.He went to Lei Feng Tower and prayed,and the tower collapsed.So,the White Snake was finally granted freedom,and reunited with her family.

Lei Feng pagoda was constructed in 975 bc,the King of Wuyue Kingdom to celebrate the birth of a son - Huangfei.It was an octagonal, five-storeyed structure built of brick and wood.The pagoda became a household name in China thanks to the popular folk tale, "The Legend of the White Snake", a touching love story about a girl who changed into a snake and a young man. In the story, the couple are separated by an evil old monk with magical powers, who had the snake girl imprisoned under the Leifeng Pagoda for years. She is finally rescued by her son who caused the collapse of the pagoda.In real life, it suffered a most severe disaster during a fire by Japanese invaders and finally collapsed in August 1924 .

Hangzhou West Lake landscape is divided into the south, north and lake areas. Lingyin Temple, Crooked Courtyard and the Temple of General Yue Fei are the framework of the north area; Flower Harbor, Tiger Spring and Liuhe (Six Harmonies) Pagoda are the representation of the south area; Gu Hill (Solitary Island) and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon are the essence of the mid-lake area.
The West Lake used to be known for its two pagodas: the Baochu Pagoda on the north and the Leifeng (Thunder Peak) Pagoda on the other side of the lake.

Landscape projects in the last five decades have basically improved the general outlook of the West Lake landscape as a whole and greatly enriched scenes and scenery. The south area, however, is not as thriving as the north area due to the collapse of Lei Feng Tower in 1924.
In order to further tap the scenic resources of West Lake, restoring the Afternoon View of Lei Feng has been taken into consideration. Currently, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, South East University and some institutes are working on a design for the reconstruction of the Leifeng Pagoda respectively. One of their designs will soon be chosen by local residents and experts and translated into reality. Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, more than twenty scenic spots around the West Lake have been elaborately designed and constructed according to their histories and characters to have the distinct themes. Among them are Viewing Fish at the Flower Harbor, Lotus in the Breeze at the Crooked Courtyard, Viewing Wintersweet Trees at the Ling Peak, Tiger Spring, Jade Spring, Jade Emperor Mountain, Hangzhou Flower Garden, Master Ruan Isle, Crown Prince Bay Park, Three Caves with Mist and Glow, Scenic Spots around West Lake, and etc.
