Recently, more and more people are talking about a new digital product, and many people have begun to use these “handbook-like” machines. With this small machine, calculation, use as a clock and calendar, accessing the Internet, sending and receiving E-mails, video recording, typewriting and word processing, use as an address book, making and writing on spreadsheets, scanning bar codes, use as a radio or stereo, playing computer games, recording survey responses, Global Positioning System (GPS), and so many thing are possible when you walking to your home or on the train. These versatile machines are called PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant).
The term "personal data assistant" was first used on January 7, 1992 by Apple Computer CEO John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, referring to the Apple Newton. PDAs are sometimes referred to as "Palms", "Palm Pilot" or "Palm Tops".
Now, Palms is a dependent company, and one of biggest PDA seller.
At that time, PDA just a simply machine, they can do much fewer works as today, such as don’t got a wireless access, don’t got a screen and a audio to support multiplayer.
Today’s PDA always has a Touch screen, such as the Apple Newton and the Palm Pilot, featured touch screens for user interaction, having only a few buttons usually reserved for shortcuts to often used programs. If don’t have a touch screen, it will has a external keyboard or chorded keyboard connected by USB or Bluetooth.
Memory cards are available on modern PDAs. This means huge amount of datum is not an impossible idea for PDAs. SD card is most popular one now, and the price of SD is decreasing rapidly, that everyone can afford it.
Wireless connectivity had developed very quickly these two years, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Wap, CDMA, 3G, and Radio… all of this are surrounding our life, and some PDAs can support all of them, let you can easily let your PDA communicate with other devices.
Wired connections are also important, because many old machines do not support any wireless connections, and also wired connections are safety, high speed, and healthy. So Modern PDAs do not chuck away the wired connectivity, and support many more wired connections such as “serial ports”, “USB cable”. I think wired connections will not instead completely by the wireless.
Software in PDAs are virtual, because even hardware had been developed, if there was not a software to use it, hardware will useless.
A first kind of software is system. Similarly like Windows Vista or Mac Os X on your computer, PDAs actually a handheld computer, so they need a system too. Now, much system software is available, such as “Palms” on Palm’s PDAs, Linux on Motorola PDAs, Symbian On Nokia and some Motorola PDAs, TD5 on Sony PDAs, Windows CE on HP PDAs, XDA PDAs, and our star Mac on iPhone.
My best one is Windows CE on HP and Linux. Because there are plenty free software under this two system.
