The problem was - Zuma refused to go and on top of that, he still had a strong following within the ANC. One of the more important ally he had was the National Intelligence Agency (similar to FBI in US). NIA was accused by other high ranking offcials of ANC spying against them illegally. Later, Zuma was accused of rape. He eventually was accquited for the rape charges and reinstated as deputy president of ANC.
In 2007, Zuma put his name forward for election of president of ANC against Mbeki.

The word 'due' is for election. It meant the election was coming up in a few months.
