就是随便paraphrase For a long time, philosophers have been arguing whether vagueness exists in the real world or is just a problem of semantics.Disputes over vagueness here, however, result from a language problem of trying to refer to an object as having an absolute value when in fact the object has a continuous range of values. In a paper published in 1923,the British philosopher Bertrand Russell ( ‘Vagueness’,Australian Journal of Psychology and Philosophy,1923:84-92 ) initiated his study of vagueness as a philosophical topic in its own right, rather than simply as something to be cleared out of the way before serious work could begin. But Russell thought that the principle of his logic were perfectly correct only as applied to perfectly precise language. Moreover,he also held that we can never attain perfect precision; we can only imagine it.
In fact, vagueness is a prevalent phenomenon in relationship between the language and situation it relates to,consider the nature of relationship between language and the world it describes in most general aspects. Therefore,in the sense of being able to describe all of human being’s experience, even language itself must imcorporate the built-in flexibility to some extent. This flexibility resides,in part,in its capacity for vagueness (Channel 2000:201).To quote Channel (ibid.:5 ),“Interest in vagueness in language use and meaning has arisen in a number of discipline :literary criticism ,linguistics, psychology, philosophy.Much of it suggests that vagueness is present in a great deal of language use,and that therefore a complete theory of language must have vagueness as an integral component.” That is,vagueness is an essential property of any natural language, not an accidental difference between two languages. As a result, when two different vague system are put in contrast,a lot more differences between the two languages become apparent. In this way, language cannot help but incorporate the attribute of vagueness.
