Transportation in Beijing
Written by sunny

This article describes some basic transportation methods and describes the advantages and disadvantages of the methods.Included are some rough estimates for rates regarding taxis,a glossary to browse through the Beijing bus map,and some useful routes for common places. This article will continue to be updated with more useful information.
Bicycles
Within the confines of campus and its immediate surroundings, the lowly bicycle is easily the most convenient method of travel.Bikes can be purchased new for a little over 120 kuai depending on how you bargain, though various components of the bike will quickly break down over time depending on how lucky you are.Expect to put in another 50-100 kuai over the lifetime of the bike to keep it in running condition.Better bikes can be purchased for more money naturally, though these bikes tend to be bigger targets for thieves which is a big problem anywhere (including the student dormitories). In any case, purchase 2 separate locks from 2 separate dealers,to prevent bikes from being stolen from thieves and unscrupulous bike dealers.A bit paranoid perhaps, though one can never be too paranoid when it comes to bikes in Beijing.
Taxis
For longer distance travel, basic public transportation around Beijing consists of taxis, subways, and buses.Taxis are conveniently available everywhere in the city, and while they may make travel around the city extremely easy, taxi costs can quickly accumulate as it is by far the most expensive method of transportation. The following table gives rough approximations to taxi fares for various locations in the city:
From Tsinghua student dormitories:
- Wudaokou 10
- Carrefour/Zhongguancun 15-20
- Tiananmen 50-60
- Chaoyang 40-60
- Houhai 30-40
Subway/Light Rail and Bus
Those with a tighter budget but don't mind crowded conditions will do well to do their travel using a combination of the subway/light rail and bus systems. The subway/light rail is extremely fast compared to other forms of transportation as it avoids the bumper to bumper traffic above and below, but services few locations.A map of the subway is provided below.Buses on the other hand, service every corner of the city, but are subject to traffic and the expansiveness of this system may prove bewildering especially to those who have not fully mastered the chinese language as all bus signs are marked only in chinese without pinyin.Using one service in conjuction with the other is very convenient due to the proximity of bus stations to subway/light rail stations and in combination offers an economical and efficient way around the city.
To make the most of these two transportation systems, one should first purchase an IC (Intelligent card) card (available from any subway station).A 20 kuai deposit is initially the required for the card after which credits for the card can be purchased.Card readers are present in all subway entrances and buses, and travel fare is automatically deducted by waving the card in front of the reader.Further credits can be purchased at any subway stop.
bjbus.com and glossary
As mentioned earlier, the bus system in Beijing is expansive and comples.Reading a map for a route can be an eye straining experience.Instead, point your browser (Internet Explorer only,Firefox is incompatible) to http://www.bjbus.com/busmap/map.jsp .An interactive map from which bus routes can be visually inspected is presented.A list of commonly used chinese characters used in the bus map interface along with its english translation is presented below:

2.Visa office :Take the light rail, and switch trains at Xizhimen.Take the subway towards Yonghegong, and take the B exit.Walk east on Andingmen Dong Da Jie(or straight after you leave exit B) for a little over a kilometer until you see the Beijing GongAnJuChuRuJingGuanLi Chu (北京公安局出入境管理处).
I hope the following article will aid those looking to see more of Beijing than what is available in Wudaokou.Good luck with your adventures
