Five hundred years ago, news of important ha ppenings —— battles lost and won, kings or r ulers overthrown (推翻) or killed —— took m onths and even years to travel from one coun try to another. The news passed by word of m outh and was never accurate. Today we can re ad in our newspapers of important events tha t occur in far away countries on the same y th ey happen.
Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other usef ul information. There are weather reports, ra dio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. The bi gger ones are put in by large companies to br ing attention to their products. They pay the n ewspapers thousands of dollars for the advert ising space, but it is worth the money, for ne ws of their products goes into almost every h ome in the country. For those who produce n ewspapers, advertisements are also very imp ortant. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newsp apers at a low price and still make a profit.
