不满足于对客观事物的再现和对外光与色彩的描绘,他们强调抒发画家自我感觉,表现主观感受和情绪；在造型方面重视形体结构和构成形的线条、色块、体积；强调艺术不等同于生活形象,即绘画不是科学,要依据画家的主观感觉在创造,因此,后印象主义画家的表现手法夸张,变形,追求个性化艺术语言.后印象主义的理论和实践导致西方绘画同文艺复兴以来的传统决裂,至此,一种全新的艺术观念出现了,20世纪西方现代派艺术开始萌芽.
