The PIV technique using DC light source was
used to study the time-dependent velocity field. The
basic principle is that light scattered from the particles
that move within the flow, enable conclusions
to be drawn regarding the surface and the velocity of
the flow. It is based on the imaging, tracking, and
recording of the patterns of small particles that are
added to the flow, move together with the flow, and
thereby retain their individuality. The particles are
illuminated inside a thin section of DC light (in this
investigation, it is the central vertical plane of the
model). The particles are observed perpendicularly
to the light sheet plane. The particles present within
this plane reflected the light and contrasted
sharply against the image background. The particles
outside this plane are not illuminated, and
therefore, do not appear in the image section. The
technique used in this study determines the velocities
in the illuminated plane of the flow by analyzing
the frame-to-frame movement of the tracer particles
in the video recordings. The tracer particles have
almost neutral density, so that their rising/settling
velocity in the fluid is negligible and they are carried
along by the flow. The movement of the particles
is recorded using a Dalsa digital camera, and the
tracker and the sector are analyzed using the PIV
software. Moreover, a solidified shell was used to
simulate the liquid-solid interface condition. The
simulated solidified shell is made using natural
sponges and has a structure similar to the dendrite
of steel, as shown in Fig. 2.
