一个出生贫苦的男孩,为了积攒学费而挨家挨户地推销产品.这天傍晚,他奔走了一整天,又累又渴又饿,可生上只剩下一毛钱.他决定向一户人家讨口饭吃.
　　可是当一位天使般的姑娘打开大门时,他有点不知所措了.他不好意思张口要饭,只求姑娘给他一口水喝.姑娘看出了他的疲惫和饥饿,微笑着给了他满满一杯牛奶.男孩饥不择食的喝完牛奶之后,不好意思的说：“我应该付给您多少钱?”姑娘仍旧微笑着对他说：“您不用付钱.妈妈经常教导我们：施以爱心,不图回报.”
　　泪水涌上男孩的眼眶,他轻轻的说；“那么,就请你接受我由衷的感谢吧!”
　　其实男孩本来是打算退学的,如今他仿佛看到上帝在朝他微笑,他觉的浑身有劲,男子汉的好奇又迸发出来了.
　　若干年之后,有一位来自小城的女人得了一种罕见的重病.当地的医生束手无策,只好把她送到大城市去,请专家们会诊治疗.一个有名的医生参加了会诊.当他看到病历上记载的家庭地址时,他马上直奔病房.来到病床前,他一眼就认出了：这位病人就是当年给了他满满一杯奶的天使.他回到办公室,决心竭尽全力回报这位：施以爱心,不图回报的姑娘.
　　经过艰辛的努力,手术成功了,女人渐渐康复.这位医生要求把她的账单送到他的办公室,他付清了所有的费用.姑娘坚持要知道她应该付多少药费.可是当账单送到她手上时,她又不敢看,因为她确信：这笔费用将会花去她所有的积蓄,或许,还不够.最后,她还是鼓起了勇气,颤抖这微微翻开了厚厚的账单,末尾的签字吸引了她的目光,她不禁轻声读了出来：

A Cup of Milk
One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by
selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was
hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked
hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and
then asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never
to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the
bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt
stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the
human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors
were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists
can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous
was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town
she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and
went down through the hospital hall into her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her
at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his
best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to
her case.


After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the
business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at
it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room.
She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take
the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on
the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words...

“Paid in full with a glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.
