Obama said the national tree is a “symbol of hope and holiday spirit (精神)”.He urged (极力主张) Americans to remember members of the U.S.military (军队) serving overseas,as well as their families.“As we hold our loved ones tight,let’s remember the military families whose loved ones are far from home.They are our heroes,” he said.
This year,along with the main tree,there are another 56 smaller trees on display,representing 56 areas in the U.S.A.Each of the trees is lit with designs by young girls from across the nation.This was part of Google’s Made with Code project.The project aims to encourage girls to try computer science and to pursue their dreams.Girls can change the designs and colors on the trees by using their computers at home.
The lighting of the National Christmas Tree is one of Washington’s oldest and grandest traditions.This year’s ceremony marks the 92nd annual lighting of the Christmas Tree near the White House.The tradition was started by President Calvin Goolidge (卡尔文.库里奇,美国第30任总统) in 1923.
