Reading Journal Guidelines
This plan is for you, your classmates and the instructor to talk this year about reading, and writing. At its best, it will strengthen your reading comprehension, increase your vocabulary, improve your reading fluency, and provide time and space for critical thinking about the texts you read.
Approximately once every two weeks you will be asked to write a reading journal. This is only a minimum requirement. You may read and write as often as you wish. The paper is your response to a reading assignment. It could be a passage of any length or a book. You will express your feelings, ideas, questions, answers, understandings, and insights about what you have read. You may draw upon topics covered in class discussion, or any topics that interests you. If you read a passage, you need to make a copy of it. If the passage is found on the internet, the URL is needed.
Your reading journal should be either neatly handwritten, or typed in 12 point fonts. Please use a standard font (Times New Roman) making sure that it is not in all caps. The minimum length is 250 words. Grammar, spelling, and structure will not be graded. I just need to be able to read your writing!
Types of Responses:
summarize the plot - what is happening in the passage or book
discuss the author’s purpose
discuss personal opinions about your reading; it could be enjoyment, boredom or empathy
make predictions about the story
compare to another passage or book
quote from the passage or book and discuss
discuss the author’s use of language
describe the mood of the story
relate the story to your own life
make connections with the characters
notice how a character has changed through the book
comment on something the character did that was surprising
pose any questions that you have about vocabulary, plot, characters’ behavior or other
make connections with other books or movies
explain what was difficult about the reading
explain the main idea of the text
compare the time of the story to the present
discuss what you would change about the passage or book
describe a problem in the passage or book and how it was solved
describe your favorite part of the reading
