The SAT driving strategy is adaptive,i.e.,it adjusts itself
automatically to a variety of situations.However,SAT is
not capable of learning,i.e.,in an identical situation it will
always issue the same gear.To further improve the
customer satisfaction,particularly for the discriminating
driver,SAT can be extended by a learning component
called IntelligenTip
In most modern vehicles with an automated transmission
gearbox the driver has a possibility to overrule the

automatically selected gear by pushing +/?buttons or
something similar.IntelligenTip utilizes this information
and feeds it back to the driving strategy.Every driver
intervention in automatic mode can be interpreted as an
error signal,that is the deviation between the desired and
the actual gear.This error signal is used for learning.
This means that IntelligenTip works equivalently to SAT
if the driver does not intervene at all.The more a driver
intervenes and the more consistent his/her interventions
are,the more can be learned.
Figure 4 gives an overview about the concept of
IntelligenTip The lower part of the figure shows the
standard SAT driving strategy.SAT proposes a gear
which is engaged by the gearbox and assessed by the
driver.If the driver is not satisfied with this gear selection
he/she can be expected to intervene via the +/?buttons.
Each such intervention leads to one learning step,except
in non-plausible cases like:
+command although transmission is already in the
highest gear.
—command although transmission is already in the
lowest gear.
Any command in manual mode (cannot be evaluated
since the driving strategy does not determine the
actual gear and thus no error signal can be derived).
The goal is to realize learning capabilities for the
following IntelligenTip?functions:driver detection,load
detection,brake assistance,deceleration,and curve
detection.In a first phase,only the static functions (driver
and load detection) are made learnable.In a second
phase,the mentioned dynamic corrections will follow.
