Chinese style dough sculpting:
Dough Figure Sculpturing is a traditional folk art in China. To make a perfect dough to retain the lustre and lively colors mix honey, lard, powdered sugar and refined powder by adding boiling water, then mix all in together with the flour.Knead the mixture until no rough grains can be seen then add edible pigment and shape them into figures. The dough should be kept moist while working. The mixture should sit for about 20 minutes covered by a wet cloth, then steamed for a couple of minutes. It should not be cooked for too long as the steamed paste will loose its lustre. The dough sculptures are then glazed with oil, nail polish or an emulsion with a brush to make them gleam, look more vivid and last longer.
Western style dough sculpting:
Dough sculpting is an old tradition of creating sculptures from soft dough.Basic recipe for dough is 1 cup flour,1/4 cup table salt,6 tablespoons water.Flour and salt are mixed with water by hands or pastry blender in a mixing bowl and then knead thoroughly until dough is pliable.Keep the dough in a plastic bag to keep it from becoming crusty, and take out only as much as you need for each part of sculpture.
Dough can be made into small plaques and you can make anything you like from dough:
animals, flowers or any other shapes you can think of.The shapes are made by rolling out some dough until it is about thickness of piecrust.Paper patterns are laid on dough and then cut around the outline of each piece with a paring knife, then brushed over with canned milk.
After they have been moulded to the desired shape the finished pieces are baked in a kitchen oven until they are dry and hard.Baked dough creations painted in bright (edible) colors look just like ceramic and will make excellent presents in the form of edible souvenirs.
