There are still concrete structures today that were made by the Romans.Modern cement was developed in the 18th century.Combining the proportioned amounts of lime,iron,silica,and alumina,and burning them in a rotating oven or kiln (Fig.6.4) at about 3,000T creates today' s Portland cement.The product from the kiln is known as clinker.To achieve the final usable product cement,the clinker is ground to a very fine consistency.Cement is bagged in 94-1b bags or sold by the ton in bulk.The types of cement are shown in Table 6.1.
