The present continuous tense
Jane is talking to a friend at the moment.
The boys are sitting in the garden.
It isn’t raining now,look.
What are you doing now? Are you writing a letter?
Is Richard working today?
USE
We use the present continuous tense to talk about things that are happening now,at the moment!
(with a future meaning)
the simple present tense
We sit here every evening. I sometimes read a book.
Emma reads the newspaper or watches television.
Uses of the simple present tense
We use the simple present to talk about
Things that happen again and again, e.g. we sit here every evening.
Facts, things that stay the same for a long time, e.g. I live in Scotland.
Feelings, e.g. I like, I want.
Thoughts, e.g. I think, I know
Present continuous or simple present?
The present continuous and the simple present tenses do not have the same uses,study carefully the differences between them.
Present continuous
Kate’s listening to the radio at the moment.
Mr brown isn’t working today.
Simple present
She listens to the music programme every day.
He doesn’t work on Saturday.
I think you’re right.
Mike wants a sandwich.
He says he’s hungry.
I have two children.

The simple present tense:dramatic use
The car stops outside the national bank. Three men get out an the river stays in the car. The three men walk into the bank and take out their guns….
Ellis throws the ball in to snow, but he loses it. Watson gives the ball to tanner. Tanner goes past two men, he shoots, but the ball hits a Liverpool player….
USE
We sometimes use the simple present tense
To tell a story, to describe the dramatic action of a play or film
To describe actions(e.g.in sport)while they are happening

Positive statements
We enjoyed the show last night.
I once worked in a restaurant.
The plane landed safely in a field.
I went to finland about five years ago.
She sang all her favourite songs.
Negative statements
Andrew didn’t stay very long yesterday.
We didn’t get home until midnight.
Use of the simple past
We use the simple past tense to talk about things that happened at a time that is now finished,e.g.last night, five years ago,yesterday.
We often use the simple past tense to tell a story.
The present perfect tense
I’ve cleaned my shoes.(so they’re clean now.)
Mr green has bought a new car.(so it’s his car now)
Joanna hasn’t esten any toast.(the toast is still on the table.)
Have you finished the housework?
You haven’t posted the letter yet.

USE
We use the present perfect to talk about
The present result of a past action
Something that happened only a short time ago(…just)
An action what we are expectiong(….yet)
Something that happened during a period of time that is not yet finished(…..today…this week)
Something that began in the past and has stayed the same up to the present(…..for six months,….since april)
Something that happened during a period of time which began in the past and has gone on up to the present(………..ever….never.)
NOTE: in British English we sometimes use the present perfect tense where Americans use the simple past,e.g. did you find those stamps yet?

We use the simple past(not the present perfect)with a phrase of past time which says(or asks)

Alan had no money last . he’d spent it all. I didn’t go to see the film last night because I ‘d seen it before.
Had mrs Williams already arrived when you got to the station?
After we had looked round the museum, we went to a restaurant.
USE
Remember that we use the present perfect tense to talk about the present result of a past action.
When we talk about the past, we sometimes talk about one thing that happened before another.we use the past perfect tense for the thing that happened first and the simple past tense for what happened later.
When one thing happened and then another, we can also use the simple past tense for both actions.
The past continuous tense
We were watching the news when the telephone rang.
What were you doing at six o’clock yesterday evening?-I was waiting for a bus

Remember that we use the present continuous tense to talk about things happening now.
We use the past continuous tense to talk about things happening at a time in the past.e.g.at six o’clock yesterday evening.

If an action was going on for some time(e.g.we were watching the news) and a new.shorter action happened(e.g.the telephone rang).we use the past continuous for the longer action.

We use the past continuous tense for a longer action that is interrupted.(the arrival of the telegram interrupted my packing.)
We use a simple past tense when one action follows another(the telegram arrived,and then I packed a suitcase.)

We also use the past continuo
us tense for two longer actions happening at the same time.
Some verbs(e.g.want,know)are not normally use in continuous tenses.
