The great invention
Good morning everyone!
Please pay attention to me. My topic is in my hand! Yes, it is paper! Who is the inventor of the paper? It’s a Chinese—Cai Lun, who lived in the eastern Han Dynasty.
Once the alphabet had been invented, man could write; but what was he to write on? He needed to find something on which information could be preserved indefinitely, something stable and durable, something easy to handle which was at the same time fairly tough but not too difficult to tear, and as light as possible so that it could be easily transported.
The ancient Egyptians used papyrus,{a substance derived from the plant of the same name, which has a triangular stem enveloped membrane which may be as much as 1m in length.}, the Greeks and Romans took notes on waxed tablets by mean of a pointed instrument which pierced the layer of wax.
But they were not clever enough. What they used was not as convenient as Chinese paper, and as cheap as Chinese paper. Just like so—called parchment, the skin of sheep, it only served for upper class. At that time, and even for today, it is still a luxurious thing.
Without paper most people were still ignorant, without paper most people were still under ruler’s thumb. Without paper all of human’s achievements can’t be passed on from one generation to another generation. Without paper all of human’s experience, whether good or bad, can’t be available nowadays. Without paper we never know what is bible, what is literature and art. Without paper there would be no books, no magazines, no newspapers, no notebooks . . . and so on.
Today paper is one of the mainsprings of our civilization. It is said that the standard of living of a country can be measured by the amount of paper it consumes. Thanks to paper, man has at his disposal one of the most convenient methods of communication. In my eyes, the invention of paper was the greatest events in the history of humanity.

My view on cell phones
Cell phones have become increasingly popular in China these days. Wherever you go you can see people using cell phones. Many college students, even high school students, have cell phones and no one makes much fuss about this phenomenon any more.
Cell phones have brought people a lot of benefits, but the most important is that they are convenient. With cell phones in their hands, they can keep in touch with anybody they want. It they want to get some information from the Internet, they can easily have their dream realized via cell phones too. Furthermore, if someone has a heart attack or a traffic accident, a call to emergency hospital or to the police can quickly bring him the help he wants.
However, cell phones can also bring people problems. The most serious is the electric wave radiation which is thought to be harmful to user's brains. Another problem is that when people are having a meeting or a class or at a concert etc., the ring of the cell phone may interrupt others. So I think people should use cell phones as little as possible and turn them off on important occasion
Economic development and environmental protection
Some people think that the urgent task in our country is to develop economy on a large scale. Many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. Many children cannot afford to f\receive the compulsory education. They believe the only way to get rid of poverty is to develop economy, which is bound to bring prosperity.
On the other hand, may people insist environmental protection should be a top priority. Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion, waste gases poison the air we are breathing, and rivers, lakes, and even seas are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories and cities. Evidently, the deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of mankind. What has brought the pollution is the rapid and advanced development of economy.
In my opinion, both economic development and environmental protection are our urgent tasks now. without economic development, we would remain backward, and we might be conquered and bullied by other countries. Without environmental protection, we would lose our home. Therefore, the best solution is that we should devote to the protection of our home while we are developing our economy. There is plenty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be achieved by balancing economic growth with protection of the environment. Many findings in scientific research can be applied in the environmental protection. Both the government and ordinary people should join hands to make this world a better place to live in, not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.
One of my best friends is an American girl. She likes sitting on the grass. When she saw me in the open air, she also let me sit on the grass. And I will say: “we should protect the plants. You’d better not sit on it.” But she will say: “in American, we all sit on the grass.” American think plants are serving for people, but Chinese people think we should protect the plants. This is one of the differences between foreign people and Chinese people.
